The Department of Laboratory Medicine includes an international WHO (World Health Organization) Collaborating Centre (CC) for Gonorrhoea and Other Sexually Transmitted Infections (at present date, Chlamydia trachomatis infections, syphilis and HIV).

Work to include also additional sexually transmitted infections, such as Mycoplasma genitalium infections and trichomoniasis, are in progress.

  2. To monitor antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae and treatment of
gonorrhoea globally, and provide WHO with expert advices and front-line research in this field. Focus of the research is to identify, phenotypically and genetically, antimicrobial resistance (old and novel resistance mechanisms), new options for treatment of gonorrhoea and to increase the knowledge regarding national and international transmission of successful antimicrobial resistant N. gonorrhoeae strains.
  3. To enhance (include new countries) the surveillance of antimicrobial resistance in N. gonorrhoeae globally, with special focus on the WHO European region.
  4. To maintain an up-to-date WHO reference panel of N. gonorrhoeae, for international quality assurance and quality control of N. gonorrhoeae diagnostics, phenotypic characterization (including antimicrobial resistance testing) and genetic characterization.
